In April 2023, the price of oil in euros bounced back (+5.3% after ‑5.2% in March). Prices in euros of imported raw materials (excluding energy) decreased again (‑1.7% after ‑1.3%), driven by the strong decline in those of industrial raw materials (‑4.7% after ‑2.6%), and in the context of an appreciation of the euro against the dollar. On the other hand, prices in euros of food commodities increased slightly (+1.2% after ‑0.1%).

Oil prices rebounded
In April 2023, the price of North Sea crude oil (Brent) in dollars recovered strongly (+8.0% after ‑5.3% in March), averaging $84.7 per barrel. In euro terms, the increase in the price per barrel was slightly less marked (+5.3% after ‑5.2%), due to the appreciation of the euro against the dollar over the period.

Industrial raw material prices in euros decreased again
Prices in euros of industrial raw materials fell again in April 2023 (‑4.7% after ‑2.6% in March). Prices of mineral materials diminished significantly (‑4.4% after ‑1.8%), driven by the very sharp decline in those of ferrous metals (‑10.1% after +1.4%). Non-ferrous metal prices continued to fall (‑1.7% after ‑4.9%). On the other hand, those of precious metals accelerated (+4.7% after +1.6%).
Prices of agro-industrial raw materials continued to slide sharply (‑7.1% after ‑7.7%), due to the further drop in those for paper pulp (‑12.8% after ‑11.2%). Prices for sawn softwood also fell (‑3.5% after ‑8.0%), as did those for hides (‑2.4% after +0.1%) and natural rubber (‑1.4% after ‑3.3%). Finally, prices for natural textile fibres were stable (+0.0% after ‑6.5%) and those for tropical woods almost unchanged (+0.1% after +0.4%).

Food commodity prices in euros rose slightly
In April 2023, food commodity prices in euros increased (+1.2% after ‑0.1% in March). Sugar prices rebounded sharply (+15.0% after ‑2.0%) as did, to a lesser extent, those for cereals (+1.8% after ‑3.9%). Prices for tropical foodstuffs accelerated (+5.4% after +1.6%) and those for seafood continued to grow (+1.8% after +2.0%). Conversely, meat prices decreased slightly (‑0.4% after +1.4%) and those for oilseeds fell again (‑4.2% after ‑4.4%).

Indices of non-energy raw materials imported by France: the indices calculated by INSEE are monthly averages of raw material prices, weighted by their share in the French imports of raw materials (2010 = 100).
