Manufactured goods: further decrease

In March 2023, household consumption of manufactured goods decreased by 1.2%, after a 0.7% fall in February. This sharper decline is mainly due to a drop in consumption of durable goods.

For the first quarter 2023 as a whole, household consumption of manufactured goods was stable (0.0%).

Durable goods: decrease

Consumption of durable goods fell again (-2.2% in March 2023 after ‑0.8% in February 2023). This shrinkage is mainly linked to the sharp decline in purchases of new and used vehicles as well as camper vans.

Consumption of other durable goods was virtually stable despite the increase in purchases of cameras and jewellery. Spending on eyeglasses fell back.

Textile-clothing: slight decrease

Spending on clothing and textiles fell again slightly in March 2023 (-0.4% after -0.3% in February 2023). Spending on clothing retreated and purchases of textiles decreased; conversely, expenses of shoes and leather rebounded.

Other manufactured goods: slight decrease

Consumption of other manufactured goods declined slightly by 0.2% in March 2023 (after -0.6% in February 2023 – revised data). Purchases of do-it-yourself goods and perfumes decreased again; consumption of medicines rebounded.

Energy: slight rebound

In March 2023, household energy expenditures slightly increased (+0.3% after ‑0.1% in February 2023). This slight rise is the result of the partial rebound in fuel purchases, partially counterbalanced by the drop in electricity and gas consumption.

For the first quarter of 2023 as a whole, energy consumption increased by 3.7%.

Scope and definition ‑ Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national-accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2014, they accounted for half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:

- Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1)

- Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2)

- Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, furniture, chemical and pharmaceutical products, plastic, rubber, minerals, metals, hardware (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewellery, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).

The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.
