In March 2023, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.9% over one month, after +1.0% in February. The prices of energy slowed down (+0.2% after +1.6%) due to a new decrease in petroleum product prices (‑0.4% after ‑1.2%). Those of services also slowed down (+0.1% after +0.8%), notably linked with the downturn in transport service prices (‑1.0% after +4.8%). The prices of food increased over a month at a rate close to that of the previous month (+1.8% after +1.7%). Those of manufactured goods (+1.5% after +0.8%) and tobacco (+7.6% after +0.0%) accelerated.

Seasonally adjusted, consumer prices increased by 0.3% in March 2023, after +1.0% in February.

Year on year, consumer prices grew by 5.7% in March 2023, after +6.3% in February. This decrease in inflation resulted from a slowdown in energy prices (+4.9% after +14.1%). The prices of manufactured goods (+4.8% after +4.7%) and services (+2.9% after +3.0%) increased over a year at a rate close to that of the previous month. The prices of food (+15.9% after +14.8%) and tobacco (+7.8% after +0.2%) accelerated.

Increase in core inflation year on year

Year on year, core inflation grew by 6.2% in March 2023, after +6.1% in February.

The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) rose by 1.0% in March 2023 over a month, after +1.1% in the previous month; year on year, it increased by 6.7%, after +7.3% in February.

Slowdown in energy prices year on year

Year on year, the prices of energy slowed down in March 2023 (+4.9% after +14.1%) due to a monthly increase (+0.2%) less strong than that observed in March 2022 (+9.0%) at the start of the conflict in Ukraine. Petroleum product prices fell back markedly (‑7.4% after +8.8%) in the wake of those of diesel (‑8.5% after +8.0%), petrol (‑3.5% after +6.4%) and liquid fuels (‑16.1% after +14.0%). The prices of gas slowed down slightly (+35.6% after +36.3%), as did those of solid fuels (+37.7% after +40.5%). Contrariwise, the prices of electricity accelerated in March (+11.0% after +10.1%), driven by the increase in market offers.

Slight slowdown in service prices year on year

Year on year, service prices rose by 2.9% in March 2023, after +3.0% in February. The prices of “other services” slowed down (+3.5% after +3.7%), notably those of services for the maintenance and repair of the dwelling (+6.0% after +6.4%), accommodation services (+1.0% after +2.9%) and package holidays (+29.0% after +33.5%). The prices of transport services also slowed down (+10.9% after +11.1%) notably airfares (+26.8% after +29.0%) and transport by railway (+8.5% after +9.5%). The decrease in communication service prices softened (‑1.4% after ‑2.0%), as did that of health service prices (‑0.1% after ‑0.2%). Contrariwise, the prices of rents, water and household refuse collection accelerated (+3.0% after +2.7%).

Slight increase in manufactured good inflation year on year

Year on year, manufactured good prices increased by 4.8% in March 2023, after +4.7% in February. The prices of clothing and footwear accelerated (+2.9% after +2.3%) and those of “other manufactured goods” increased over a year at the same rate than in the previous month (+6.5%). The prices of furniture and furnishings slowed down (+9.1% after +9.8%), as did those of major household appliances (+4.4% after +5.7%), small electric household appliances (+9.1% after +13.9%) and vehicles (+6.5% after +6.6%). Contrariwise, the prices of glassware, tableware and household utensils accelerated (+9.7% after +8.6%), as did those of cleaning and maintenance products (+13.6% after +12.7%), games, toys and hobbies (+2.4% after +1.2%) and garden products, plants and flowers (+6.6% after +5.3%). Finally, the decrease in health product prices softened slightly (‑0.4% after ‑0.5%).

Acceleration in food prices year on year

Year on year, food prices rose by 15.9% in March 2023, after +14.8% in February. The prices of fresh products accelerated for the third consecutive month (+17.1% after +15.0% in February and +10.2% in January), notably those of fresh vegetables (+29.3% after +23.3%) and fresh fruits (+10.1% after +9.8%). Contrariwise, those of fresh fish slowed down (+10.0% after +12.0%). Excluding fresh products, food prices also accelerated (+15.7% after +14.8%), notably the prices of bread and cereals (+15.4% after +14.4%), meat (+15.5% after +15.4%), cheese and curd (+20.3% after +19.4%), sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery (+15.5% after +13.4%), non-alcoholic (+14.0% after +12.7%) and alcoholic beverages (+8.1% after +7.4%).
