Over a month, output recovered in most industries

In February 2023, output recovered markedly over a month in the manufacture of transport equipment (+5.6% after ‑7.6%), particularly in the manufacture of other transport equipment (+7.3% after ‑11.5%) and, to a lesser extent, in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+3.4% after ‑1.9%). It picked up in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.6% after ‑0.9%) and more slightly in the “other manufacturing” industries (+0.4% after ‑1.3%). Output was up again in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+0.9% after +2.7%). It increased slightly in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+0.3% after ‑1.3%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+0.7% after +1.6%).

Over a year, manufacturing output was up by 1.7%

In the manufacturing industry, output of the last three months (December 2022 to February 2023) was 1.7% higher than that of the same months a year ago. It was also up, albeit slightly, in the whole industry (+0.5%).

Over this one-year period, output expanded markedly in the manufacture of transport equipment (+12.3%), particularly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+16.4%), less impacted than last year by supply difficulties for electronic components. It rose in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+3.9%) and the “other manufacturing” industries (+0.3%). It was up substantially in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+24.2%), due to the reopening of a refinery that was shut down in the same period a year earlier. On the contrary, output decreased sharply in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (‑6.1%), mainly because of the drop in electricity production. Finally, it declined in the manufacture of food products and beverages (‑3.3%).

Over a year, output declined sharply in some energy-intensive industries

In the context of rising electricity and gas prices, energy-intensive industries are particularly exposed to rising production costs, which may affect their output. Output in the last three months (December 2022 to February 2023) was thus down sharply compared to that of the same months a year ago in the manufacture of basic iron and steel and of ferro-alloys (‑25.9%), the manufacture of pulp, paper and paperboard (‑22.5%) and the manufacture of basic chemicals (‑19.9%).

The evolution of the January 2023 manufacturing index is revised upwards

The evolution of the manufacturing index between December 2022 and January 2023 is revised upwards by 0.3 points (after rounding), compared to the previous release, at ‑1.5% instead of ‑1.8%. The evolution of the index for the whole industry is revised upwards by 0.5 points (after rounding), at ‑1.4% instead of ‑1.9%.
