Cereal prices fell over a month and accelerated year on year
In February 2023, cereal prices fell over one month, but notably less than in January (‑1.0% after ‑4.3% in January). Soft wheat prices continued to drop (‑2.1% after ‑5.1%), due in particular to competition from Russia and Ukraine. Maize prices rebounded (+3.0% after ‑2.7%), mainly due to a downward revision of French and world stock estimates, to the depreciation of the euro against the dollar and to fears generated by the drought and frost in Argentina, and despite concerns about demand caused by avian flu. Year on year, cereal prices accelerated (+6.9% after +5.7%). Compared to February 2020, they have risen sharply (+61.0%).
The fall of oilseed prices continued in February 2023, but at a slower pace than in January (‑1.1% over one month after ‑2.8%). They were driven down by rapeseed prices (‑1.5% after ‑2.6%), due in particular to an upward revision of crop rotation forecasts in France, and by sunflower prices (‑0.5% after ‑2.6%), while soybean prices recovered (+1.3% after ‑6.5%). Year on year, oil seed prices dropped by 21.9% (after ‑20.7%). They were nevertheless 44.1% higher than in February 2020.

Animal prices rose over one month and remained up sharply year on year
In February 2023, animal prices continued to go up over one month (+1.7% after +1.6%), due in particular to the sharp acceleration of pig prices (+9.1% after +5.3%) owing to a significant drop in supply, while poultry prices slowed down (+0.2% after +2.1%) and large cattle prices fell back (‑0.8% after +0.3%).
Year on year, animal prices still rose sharply in February 2023 (+25.5% after +27.9% in January) due to the sharp rise of pig (+58.7% after +46.3%), poultry (+23.7% after +30.5%) and large cattle (+18.2% after +25.0%) prices. In February 2023, animal prices were 40.1% higher than in February 2020.

Egg and milk prices rose sharply year on year
In February 2023, egg prices slowed down over one month (+5.4% after +13.0%). They remained up very sharply year on year (+77.4% after +77.7% in January), due to persistent high demand and reduced supply, mainly as a result of avian flu. They have more than doubled since February 2020 (+122.2%). The price of cow milk decelerated sharply over one month (+0.9% after +6.5%). Its rise remained very significant both year on year (+21.7% after +23.4%) and over three years (+38.1%).

For further information
The index of producer prices for agricultural products (IPPAP) measures the change in product prices when the products are put on the market for the first time. It is published in base and reference 100 in 2015. The weight-coefficients of fresh fruit and vegetables change every month so that they reflect their seasonal pattern. Their variations should therefore be interpreted only year on year. If needed, indices are seasonally adjusted.
The index of the purchase prices of inputs for agricultural production (IPPIAP) reflects the price evolution of goods and services used in the agricultural process. It is not seasonally adjusted.
Further informations (including IPPAP and IPPIAP methodologies) are available through the “Documentation" tab on the web page of this publication.
