graphiqueFood products, engineered goods and energy
Manufactured goods: decrease
In February 2023, household consumption of manufactured goods fell over one month (-0.9% after +1.6%) mainly due to the decline in consumption of durable goods.
Durable goods: decline
In February 2023, consumption of durable goods fell by 1.4% after +3.4% in January. The consumption of transportation goods decreased (-1.6%) mainly due to a sharp decline in purchases of automobiles. Spending on household durables was also down (-2.0%), especially on furniture, electronic products and household appliances.
Textile-clothing: stability
Spending on clothing and textiles was stable in February 2023 after a very slight decline in the previous month. The increase in apparel spending is offset by a sharp decline in textile and footwear and leather purchases.
Other manufactured goods: slight decrease
Consumption of other manufactured goods declined again (-0.5% in February 2023 after -0.2% in January 2023), due in particular to a decline in the consumption of medicines, perfumes, and, to a lesser extent, in purchases of do-it-yourself goods.

Scope and definition ‑ Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national-accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2014, they accounted for half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:
Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1)
Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2).
Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, furniture, chemical and pharmaceutical products, plastic, rubber, minerals, metals, hardware (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewellery, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).
The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.
