The balance of opinion related to ordering intentions has retreated sharply

In March 2023, the balance of opinion on ordering intentions has retreated sharply after a three-month rise and has moved away from its long-term average. The one about past sales has diminished sharply again and has moved closer to its own. The one on expected sales has also diminished after a three-month rise and has moved away from its average level. The balance concerning the general business outlook is stable for its part. Finally, compared to last month, slightly fewer business managers consider that the evolution of their business situation is difficult to forecast.

The balances of opinion related to the recent change in the workforce size and the workforce size for the next three months are virtually stable and lie below their respective averages.

The balance associated with the current level of stocks has slightly rebounded but remains below its average.

In particular, the balance of opinion related to the workforce size for the next three months has retreated. Similarly, the balance of opinion concerning ordering intentions has diminished sharply again.

Conversely, the balance of opinion related to the recent change in the workforce size has rebounded.

In trade and repair of motor vehicles, the business climate has lost three points. It has reached 101 and thus remains just above its long term average (100).

The balances of opinion related to ordering intentions and past sales have retreated strongly and have moved below their respective averages.

The business climate for February 2023 has not been revised in retail trade as a whole and in its sub-sectors (after rounding).

The whole sector “retail trade and trade and repair of motor vehicles” is composed for 70% of retail trade and for 30% of trade and repair of motor vehicles.

The three composite indicators of business climate presented here are estimated independently of one another. Thus, that of the whole of the retail trade and in trade and repair of motor vehicles cannot be deduced from the two others. The same balances of opinion are included into their calculations, but they are not assigned the same weightings. Also, the indicators are scaled to have a long-run average of 100 and a standard deviation of 10. The three climate series do not have the same historical beginning, so their standardisation differs slightly. Discrepancies may therefore appear from time to time.

For the three-modality questions, a balance of opinion is the difference between weighted percentage of “increase” or “above normal” answers and weighted percentage of “decrease” or “below normal” answers.
