Cereal prices fell over a month and decelerated year on year
In December 2022, cereal prices continued to fall sharply over one month (‑5.9% after ‑5.4% in November). This drop reflected that of soft wheat prices (‑5.4% after ‑5.2%), due in particular to concerns about the world economic outlook and strong competition due to resumed exports from Ukraine and Russia, despite the ongoing conflict. Maize prices also fell (‑7.9% after ‑7.5%) in a context where demand remained sluggish due in particular to avian flu. Year on year, cereal prices decelerated, but continued to rise very sharply (+9.0% after +12.4%). Compared to December 2019, they have risen sharply (+74.4%).
The fall of oil seed prices intensified in December 2022 (‑7.7% over one month after ‑2.2%). They were driven down by rapeseed prices (‑7.9% after ‑2.3%), due to the appreciation of the euro against the dollar and limited demand, sunflower prices (‑7.5% after ‑2.4%) and soybean prices (‑4.6% after +0.7%). Year on year, oil seed prices fell by 14.9% (after ‑8.1%). Since December 2019, they have risen nevertheless by 46.2%.

Animal prices fell over one month and decelerated year on year
In December 2022, animal prices fell over one month (‑0.7% after ‑1.1%), due in particular to the fall of poultry (‑2.4% after +0.9%) and large cattle (‑1.0% after +0.1%) prices, while pig prices recovered slightly (+0.2% after ‑6.7%).
Year on year, animal prices slowed down slightly in December 2022 (+26.2% after +29.0% in November). Pig (+42.2% after +47.4%), large cattle (+27.1% after +29.6%) and poultry (+22.5% after +26.3%) prices decelerated. In December 2022, animal prices were 31.8% higher than in December 2019.

Egg prices slowed down and milk prices rose sharply year on year
In December 2022, egg prices fell over one month, albeit at a less pronounced rate than in November (‑2.7% after ‑6.5%). They remained up sharply year on year (+71.3%) in a context of sharp demand and reduced supply, notably because of avian flu, but slowed down (+87.5% in November). They have risen by 91.2% since December 2019. The price of cow milk continued to rise over one month (+0.2% after +2.3%). It went up sharply year on year (+24.8% after +25.8%) and over three years (+32.2%).

For further information
The index of producer prices for agricultural products (IPPAP) measures the change in product prices when the products are put on the market for the first time. It is published in base and reference 100 in 2015. The weight-coefficients of fresh fruit and vegetables change every month so that they reflect their seasonal pattern. Their variations should therefore be interpreted only year on year. If needed, indices are seasonally adjusted.
The index of the purchase prices of inputs for agricultural production (IPPIAP) reflects the price evolution of goods and services used in the agricultural process. It is not seasonally adjusted.
Further informations (including IPPAP and IPPIAP methodologies) are available through the “Documentation" tab on the web page of this publication.
