In November 2022, the volume of sales in trade was virtually stable (+0.1%), following a fall in October (‑0.8%).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In November 2022, the volume of sales in trade was virtually stable (+0.1%), following a fall in October (‑0.8%).
In November 2022, a virtual stability of the sales volume in trade
The volume of sales in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles bounced back in November 2022 (+0.4% after ‑0.3% in October), especially in the “other specialised wholesale” (fuels, wood, chemical products, etc.: +2.8% after ‑1.8%). Conversely, the volume of sales kept decreasing in wholesale on a fee or contract basis (‑2.1% after ‑1.0% in October).
In November 2022, the volume of sales fell again in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑0.3% after ‑1.3% in October), both in non specialised stores (‑1.0% after ‑1.3%) and retail trade not in stores (‑0.8% after ‑0.9%). In contrast, it recovered slightly in specialised stores (+0.3% after ‑1.3%), especially in the “other household equipment” (furniture, appliances, hardware, etc.: +2.0% after ‑2.5%). Concerning automotive fuel in specialised stores, the volume of sales fell back in November (‑2.5% after +1.6%).
The volume of sales was virtually stable in November 2022 in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.1% after ‑1.6% in October). While it bounced back in maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (+1.8% after ‑0.3%), it fell again in the sale of motor vehicles (‑0.2%), but more moderately than in October (‑1.9%).
Early estimate
According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have decreased in December 2022 (‑0.9%). Over the fourth quarter of 2022, it may have decreased by 0.2% compared to that of the fourth quarter of 2021.

From September to November 2022 the volume of sales increased by 1.4% over a year
The volume of sales of the three months under review (September to November 2022) in overall trade went up (+1.4%) compared to that of the same period in 2021. It grew in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.4%), in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+2.4%), and in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.9%). Within the latter, the volume of sales increased over a year in specialised stores (+2.3%). In contrast, it fell back in non-specialised stores (‑0.6%) and in retail trade not in stores (‑1.4%).
Revisions
The monthly percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in October 2022 is left unchanged at ‑0.8% (after rounding), compared to the previous release.
