The balance of opinion related to past sales has rebounded sharply

In January 2023, the balance of opinion on past sales has rebounded sharply and has moved away from its average, while the one about expected sales has also increased, but remains below its own. The balance of opinion on ordering intentions is virtually stable. The one about the general business outlook has retreated and has moved slightly below its long-term average. Finally, compared to last month, slightly more business managers consider that the evolution of their business situation is difficult to forecast.

The balance of opinion related to the recent change in the workforce size is stable, while the one concerning the workforce size for the next three months has rebounded after a four-month decline. Both balances of opinion lie below their averages.

The balance associated with the current level of stocks has increased slightly but remains below its average. Finally, the bimonthly balance of opinion related to the cash position has retreated sharply and has moved below its average.

In January 2023, in retail trade, the business climate has rebounded. At 98, it has gained six points but remains below its long-term average (100).

In particular, the balances of opinion related to past and expected sales have increased sharply. Similarly, the balance of opinion concerning the recent change in the workforce size has increased again and the one related to the workforce size for the next three months has rebounded sharply.

Conversely, the bimonthly balance of opinion related to the cash position has retreated markedly.

In trade and repair of motor vehicles, the business climate indicator has deteriorated slightly

In trade and repair of motor vehicles, the business climate has lost two points. At 102, it remains above its long term average (100).

The balance of opinion on the recent change in the workforce size has retreated strongly as well as, to a lesser extent, the one on ordering intentions.

Conversely, the balance related to past sales has increased sharply as well as the one concerning stocks.

Revisions

The business climate for December 2022 has been revised downwards by one point in retail trade as a whole and in its sub-sectors. These revisions are mainly due to the inclusion of late responses from companies.

The whole sector “retail trade and trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles” is composed for 70% of retail trade and for 30% of trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles.

The three composite indicators of business climate presented here are estimated independently of one another. Thus, that of the whole of the retail trade and in trade and repair of motor vehicles cannot be deduced from the two others. The same balances of opinion are included into their calculations, but they are not assigned the same weightings. Also, the indicators are scaled to have a long-run average of 100 and a standard deviation of 10. The three climate series do not have the same historical beginning, so their standardisation differs slightly. Discrepancies may therefore appear from time to time.

For the three-modality questions, a balance of opinion is the difference between weighted percentage of “increase” or “above normal” answers and weighted percentage of “decrease” or “below normal” answers.

Since the definitive data of April 2020, the way of correcting non-response has been modified. The usual method was to fill in missing answers by carrying on past answers from non-responding companies. The results are now computed on the sole basis of responding companies.

Company responses were collected between 28 December 2022 and 18 January 2023.
