Monthly change: ‑0.1% in December; year-on-year change: +5.9%

In December 2022, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) declined by 0.1% over one month, after +0.3% in November. The prices of energy fell back (‑3.6% after +0.9%) due to the decrease in petroleum product prices (‑5.2% after +0.3%). The prices of manufactured goods slowed down (+0.2% after +0.4%) and those of food increased at the same pace than in the previous month (+0.5%). The prices of services accelerated (+0.3% after +0.1%), notably those of transport services (+2.3% after +0.6%).

Seasonally adjusted, consumer prices declined by 0.1%, after +0.2% in November.

Year on year, consumer prices grew by 5.9% in December 2022, after +6.2% in November. This decrease in inflation resulted from a slowdown in energy prices (+15.1% after +18.4%) and, to a lesser extent, service prices (+2.9% after +3.0%). The prices of food increased over one year at the same pace than in the previous month (+12.1%) and those of manufactured goods accelerated (+4.6% after +4.4%).

Stability in core inflation year on year

Year on year, core inflation was stable in December, at 5.3%, as in November.

The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) declined by 0.1% over one month, after +0.4% in the previous month; year on year, it rose by 6.7%, after +7.1% in November.

Slowdown in energy prices year on year

Year on year, the prices of energy slowed down in December 2022 (+15.1% after +18.4%). Petroleum product prices decelerated for the second consecutive month (+14.3% after +17.9%), due to the slowdown in diesel prices (+15.6% after +19.3%) and liquid fuel prices (+37.8% after +51.6%). The prices of electricity (+7.3% after +9.9%), gas (+29.3% after +32.6%) and solid fuels (+52.1% after +55.3%) were also less dynamic in December.

Slight slowdown in service prices year on year

Year on year, service prices rose by 2.9% in December 2022, after +3.0% in November. The increase in “other service” prices softened slightly (+3.7% after +3.8%), notably those of accommodation services (+5.6% after +6.0%), participation in recreational and sporting services (+3.9% after +4.2%) and insurance services (+1.0% after +2.0%). The prices of housing-related services slowed down (+2.0% after +2.4%), as did those of transport services (+8.6% after +9.1%), in particular those of transport by road (+4.7% after +9.1%). The prices of communication services declined by 1.4%, as in November. The prices of health services increased by 0.1%, as in the previous month.

Stability in food inflation year on year

Year on year, food prices increased by 12.1% in December 2022, as in November. Excluding fresh products, the food prices accelerated (+12.6% after +12.0%), notably those of milk, cheese and eggs (+16.9% after +16.0%), meat (+14.0% after +13.7%), bread and cereals (+12.1% after +11.8%), sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery (+9.5% after +8.7%), non-alcoholic (+10.6% after +10.2%) and alcoholic beverages (+5.8% after +5.3%). Contrariwise, the prices of fresh products slowed down (+9.3% after +12.7%), in particular, those of fresh vegetables (+12.4% after +21.0%), fresh fruits (+6.1% after +7.5%) and fresh or chilled seafood (+8.9% after +9.1%).

Slight acceleration in manufactured good prices year on year

Year on year, manufactured good prices increased by 4.6% in December 2022, after +4.4% in November due to the rise in “other manufactured good” prices (+6.2% after +5.9%) and the less decrease in health product prices (‑0.6% after ‑0.7%). The prices of furniture and furnishings accelerated (+9.5% after +7.6%), as did those of non-durable household goods (+15.5% after +14.1%), other appliances, articles and products for personal care (+7.1% after +6.5%), newspapers and periodicals (+5.9% after +5.5%) and vehicles (+7.4% after +7.0%). Contrariwise, the prices of clothing and footwear slowed down (+2.6% after +2.8%) notably those of garments (+2.4% after +3.2%).
