Energy: sharp decline
In October, household energy spending fell sharply (-7.9% after +3.1% in September) due to the drop in electricity and gas consumption. The particularly mild weather in October may have prompted households to use less home heating.
Purchases of oil refinery products as a whole were also down after peaking in September (-5.1% after +6.9%). These trends, estimated on the basis of the quantities delivered to sales outlets, should be interpreted with caution: the reinforcement of the reduction at the pump in September then the strike at the refineries in October may have altered the differences between the quantities distributed and those actually purchased by households over these two months.

Engineered goods: clear decline
In October, household consumption of manufactured goods fell by 1.7% after a 2.2% increase in September.
Durables : decline
Durable goods consumption declined by 1.7% (after +2.4 % in September). The decline was due to lower spending on capital goods, particularly telephones, and, to a lesser extent, a sharp decrease in purchases of new vehicles.
Textile-clothing : decrease
Spending on clothing and textiles fell sharply in October (-4.1% after +5.1% in September). This decline is mainly explained by a downturn in spending on clothing and to a lesser extent by a decrease in purchases of shoes and leather.
Other engineered goods: slight drop
Consumption of other manufactured goods fell by 0.3% in October after rising by 0.2% in September. This slight decline was mainly due to a drop in do-it-yourself purchases.

Food products: further decrease
In October, household food consumption diminished (-1.4%) for the fifth consecutive month. This decline is explained by both the decrease in the consumption of food products and the decline in purchases of agricultural products.
Food consumption has thus been on a clear downward trend since November 2021.
Tobacco consumption was down very slightly.
