30 September 2022 · n° 261In August 2022, a further fall of large-scale food retailing turnover (−0.5%) Turnover in large-scale food retailing - August 2022
In August 2022, the total turnover in large-scale food retailing (including sales not in stores) kept decreasing (−0.5% after −0.9% in July). The in-store sales went up for both food products (+1.1% after +1.3%) and non-food products (+1.1% after −0.8%). In contrast, the turnover fell sharply in the sales of automotive fuel (−10.8% after −1.8% in July), due to the fall in prices. However, turnover remained at a very high level in the context of high energy prices.
The in-store sales turnover fell again in supermarkets (−1.4% after −0.4%) and remained virtually stable in hypermarkets (+0.1% after −1.2%).

Increase in turnover over a year (+7.3%)
Resulting mainly from price changes, the turnover of the past three months (June to August 2022) in large-scale food retailing increased (+7.3%) compared to that of the same period one year earlier. The turnover grew in food products (+3.5%), and decreased in non-food products (−0.9%). It increased very strongly in the sales of automotive fuel (+31.5%), mainly due to the sharp rise in prices over a year.
Year on year, the sales from June to August 2022 increased both in supermarkets (+6.2%) and hypermarkets (+8.5%).
