In August 2022, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 0.5% over one month, after +0.3% in July. The prices of manufactured goods rebounded (+1.8% after -1.6%) in particular linked with the end of the summer sales. The prices of food accelerated (+1.7% after +1.0%) due to the rebound of fresh product prices (+2.0% after -1.0%) and the increase in food excluding fresh product prices (+1.6% after +1.4%). The prices of services slowed down (+0.3% after +1.3%) and the decrease in energy prices was more marked than in July (-3.9% after -1.3%).
Seasonally adjusted, consumer prices rose by 0.2% after +0.4% in July.
Year on year, consumer prices grew by 5.9% after +6.1% in July. This slight decrease in inflation resulted from the slowdown in energy prices (+22.7% after +28.5%) in particular petroleum product prices (+28.7% after +39.0%). The prices of services increased year on year at the same rate as the previous month (+3.9%). Those of food accelerated (+7.9% after +6.8%), as did those of manufactured products (+3.5% after +2.7%).
Acceleration in core inflation year on year
Year on year, core inflation grew by 4.7% in August, after +4.3% in July. The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) rose by 0.5% over one month, after +0.3% in the previous month; year-on-year, it increased by 6.6% after +6.8% in July.

Slowdown in energy prices year on year
Year on year, the prices of energy slowed down in August (+22.7% after +28.5%). The year-on-year increase in petroleum product prices was less sharp than in the previous month (+28.7% after +39.0%) notably those of petrol (+13.4% after +25.5%), diesel (+29.4% after +37.6%) and liquid fuels (+69.0% after +83.5%). The prices of electricity (+7.7% after +8.2%) and gas (+37.9% after +42.4%) also slowed down.
Stable inflation in services year on year
Year on year, service prices rose by 3.9% in August, as in July. The prices of “other services” accelerated slightly (+4.8% after +4.7%) notably due to the rebound in recreational and cultural service prices (+0.7% after -0.5%) and the increase in the prices of catering services (+4.9% after +4.5%), maintenance and repair of personal transport equipment services (+7.1% after +6.5%) and social protection services (+6.1% after +5.7%). The prices of housing-related services (+1.8%) and communication services (+0.7%) increased over a year at the same rate as the previous month. The prices of transport services slowed down (+15.3% after +17.4%) in particular those of the railway (+6.3% after +11.1%) and airfares (+39.8% after +46.5%). Finally, the prices of health services were stable (+0.0% after +0.1%).

Acceleration in food prices year on year
Year on year, food prices increased by 7.9% in August, after +6.8% in July. The increase in fresh products is less brisk than in the previous month (+3.5% after +5.2%): the prices of fresh vegetables (+0.5% after +4.9%) and fresh fish (+15.7% after +17.2%) slowed down. Contrariwise, those of fresh fruits accelerated (+3.2% after +2.7%). Excluding fresh products, the food prices sped up sharply (+8.6% after +7.1%) notably those of meat (+10.2% after +8.8%), milk, cheese and eggs (+10.9% after +8.0%), bread and cereals (+9.1% after +7.6%), alcoholic (+3.7% after +3.0%) and non-alcoholic beverages (+7.1% after +6.1%).
Continuing rise in manufactured good prices year on year
Year on year, manufactured product prices increased by 3.5% in August, after +2.7% in July. This acceleration was due to the increase in the prices of clothing and footwear (+2.7% after +0.5%) and “other manufactured goods” (+4.7% after +4.1%) in link with the end of the summer sales and a larger than expected monthly increase in August 2022 than in August 2021. The prices of furniture and furnishings (+8.9% after +7.9%), non-durable household goods (+8.5% after +6.3%), glassware, tableware and households utensils (+5.6% after +4.5%), other appliances, articles and products for personal care (+4.2% after +3.3%) and vehicles (+6.3% after +5.0%) accelerated. The year-on-year decrease in health product prices softened slightly in August (-1.3% after -1.5%).

Revisions
Taking into account the latest price reporting at the end of the month has resulted in a less marked slowdown in energy prices and a more sustained acceleration in food prices.
Compared to the provisional estimates published on August 31, 2022, the month-on-month and the year-on-year changes in CPI and HICP were up by 0.1%.
