In July 2022, output decreased in most industries
In July 2022, output declined again in the “other manufacturing” industries (–1.7% after –0.2%). It fell back in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (–2.1% after +2.4%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (–1.9% after +2.8%) and in the manufacture of transport equipment (–1.8% after +2.9%). In this latter activity, output folded sharply in the manufacture of other transport equipment (–3.3% after +6.1%), while it recovered slightly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+0.5% after –1.6%). Output also dwindled in the manufacture of food products and beverages (–0.8% after +2.0%). On the contrary, output bounced back in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+1.1% after –2.8%).

Over a year, manufacturing output increased by 1.8%
In the manufacturing industry, cumulative output over the last three months (May to July 2022) was higher than that of the same months of the previous year (+1.8%). However, it was down slightly in the whole industry (–0.2%).
Over this one-year period, output plummeted in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (–9.8%), owing to a drop in energy production. It decreased slightly in the manufacture of food products and beverages (–0.4%). Conversely, it went up moderately in the “other manufacturing” industries (+1.2%) and more significantly in the manufacture of transport equipment (+5.5%), particularly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+10.4%), which was less impacted than a year ago by the shortage in semiconductors. Output was also up in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+2.7%). It expanded sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+25.6%), because of a particularly low level a year ago due to the shutdown of several refineries.
The evolution of the June 2022 manufacturing index is revised downwards
The evolution of the manufacturing index between May and June 2022 is revised downwards compared to the previous release by 0.3 points, after rounding, at +0.9% instead of +1.2%. The evolution of the index for the whole industry is also revised downwards by 0.2 points, after rounding, at +1.2% instead of +1.4%.
