Household consumption in goods in volume* fell back in July (–0.8% after +0.1% – revised data). This fall is mainly due to the further decrease of consumption of manufactured goods (–1.4% after –0.7%). Food consumption also decreased further (–0.4% after –0.3%). Energy consumption fell back (–0.4% after +2.7% in June).

Engineered goods: further decline
Consumption of engineered goods fell in July (–1.4% after –0.7%), mainly because of the clear fall back in consumption of durable goods (–1.6% after +0.8%). Consumption of clothing and textiles decreased again sharply (–3.7% after –4.8%). Those of "other engineered goods" bounced back slightly (+0.3% after –0.3%).
Durables: clear fall
In July, consumption of durable goods fell back (–1.6% after +0.8%). This is mainly explained by the decrease in consumption of transport equipment (–1.5% after +1.0%), with notably a decrease in purchases of new and used cars. Consumption of housing equipment also decreased (–1.9% after +1.0%). Consumption of other durable goods decreased again with particularly a drop in medical equipment and jewelry.
Textile-clothing: further sharp decline
Consumption of clothing and textiles dropped further (–3.7% after –4.8%), due to a fall in purchases of shoes.
Other engineered goods: slight rebound
Consumption of "other engineered goods" bounced back slightly (+0.3% after –0.3%), with particularly an increase in purchases of perfumes.

The variation of expenditure for the month of June 2022 is revised downwards
The evolution of household consumption in goods for June is revised downwards by 0.1 points, to +0.1% instead of +0.2%. Since the previous publication, new information has been integrated and the coefficients for seasonal adjustment (SA) and trading day adjustment (TDA) have been updated.

Scope and definition – Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national-accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2010, they accounted for half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:
Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1) Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2).
Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, metals, plastic, rubber, chemicals, minerals, furniture, hardware, drugs (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewelry, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).
The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.
