In April 2022, output fell back in other manufacturing industries

In April 2022, output fell back in the “other manufacturing” industries (–0.8% after +0.3%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (–2.0% after +0.1%). It decreased again in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (–0.8% after –0.9%). On the contrary, output recovered in the manufacture of transport equipment (+5.1% after –2.9%), due to the sharp increase in the manufacture of other transport equipment (+6.3% after +0.1%) and the rebound in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+3.2% after –7.5%). It also recovered in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+1.6% after –1.4%). It was virtually stable in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+0.1% after +1.1%).

Over a year, manufacturing output was up (+1.7%)

Cumulative output over the last three months (February to April 2022) was higher than that of the same months of the previous year in the manufacturing industry (+1.7%), as well as in the whole industry (+0.6%).

Over this one-year period, output went up in “other manufacturing” (+1.9%),in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+3.3%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+1.9%). It expanded sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+29.2%), because of a particularly low level a year ago due to the shutdown of several refineries. Conversely, output decreased markedly in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (–5.0%) and in the manufacture of transport equipment (–3.1%). It plummeted particularly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−16.5%) which was strongly impacted by the shortage in semiconductors and other inputs.

The evolution of the March 2022 manufacturing index is revised upwards slightly

The evolution of the manufacturing index between February and March 2022 is revised upwards by 0.1 points, after rounding, at −0.2% instead of −0.3%. The evolution of the index for the whole industry is also revised upwards by 0.1 points, after rounding, at −0.4% instead of −0.5%.
