In March 2022, output decreased again in the manufacture of transport equipment
In March 2022, output decreased again in the manufacture of transport equipment (–2.8% after –1.5%), due to the decline in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (–7.3% after –5.4%), while it stagnated in the manufacture of other transport equipment (stability after +1.2%). It also continued to decline in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (–1.5% after –2.7%). It went down in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (–0.7% after +1.0%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (–0.3% after +0.4%). On the contrary, it recovered in the “other manufacturing” industries (+0.3% after –1.6%) and it increased in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+1.1% after +0.5%).

Over a year, manufacturing output increased (+1.2%)
Output of the first quarter of 2022 was higher than that of the same quarter of 2021 in the manufacturing industry (+1.2%), as well as in the whole industry (+0.3%).
Over this one-year period, output was up in “other manufacturing” (+1.6%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+3.0%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+1.7%). It expanded sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+34.2%), because of a particularly low level a year ago due to the shutdown of several refineries. Conversely, it decreased markedly in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (–4.3%) and in the manufacture of transport equipment (–6.0%). It plummeted particularly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−16.6%) which was strongly impacted by the difficulties in supplying semiconductors and other inputs.
The evolution of the February 2022 manufacturing index is revised downwards
The evolution of the manufacturing index between January and February 2022 is revised downwards by 0.4 points, after rounding, at −0.9% instead of −0.5%. The evolution of the whole industry index is revised downwards by 0.3 points (at −1.2% instead of −0.9%). These revisions are primarily due to the raw data.
