Soaring cereal prices over one month and year on year
In March 2022, cereal prices rebounded very sharply (+36.9% over one month after –2.0%), in the wake of the evolution of soft wheat prices (+39.8% after –2.3%) due to the war in Ukraine and the international sanctions against Russia, which affected two of the main soft wheat exporting countries. This conflict and its consequences were also behind the very strong rise of maize prices in March (+38.2% after +1.4%). Cereal prices also soared year on year (+68.6% after +21.1%).
The impact of the war was also marked on oilseed prices: they rose considerably in March 2022 (+27.4% over one month after +0.3% in February), due to the rises in sunflower prices (+43.0% after +3.9%) and rapeseed prices (+25.2% after –1.0%). Year on year, oilseed prices accelerated strongly (+70.8% after +46.3%).

More about French agricultural price indices
The index of producer prices for agricultural products (IPPAP) measures the change in product prices when the products are put on the market for the first time. It is published in base and reference 100 in 2015. The weight-coefficients of fresh fruit and vegetables change every month so that they reflect their seasonal pattern. As a result their variations can be interpreted only year on year. If needed, indices are seasonally adjusted.
The index of the purchase prices of inputs for agricultural production (IPPIAP) reflects the price evolution of goods and services used in the agricultural process. It is not seasonally adjusted.
The methodology of IPPAP is available on the Insee web site: https://www.insee.fr/en/metadonnees/source/indicateur/p1657/description
