In November 2021, except for the manufacture of motor vehicles, output fell back sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment

In November 2021, output fell back in the manufacture of transport equipment (–4.6% after +8.0%): it was down strongly in the manufacture of other transport equipment (−13.1% after +12.9%) but up sharply in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+10.5% after +0.3%). It went down more moderately in “other manufacturing” (–0.4% after –0.1%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (–1.4% after –0.1%). On the contrary, it remained dynamic in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.2% after +1.6%) and it picked up in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+0.8% after –0.1%). Output increased strongly in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+8.2% after +1.5%).

In November 2021, output remained in decline compared to its February 2020 level in most industrial activities. It plunged in the manufacture of transport equipment (−27.4%), both in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−22.9%) and in the manufacture of other transport equipment (−30.2%). Output declined more moderately in “other manufacturing” (−3.4%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−3.3%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (−2.0%). Output was close to its February 2020 level in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+0.1%) and above it in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+2.2%).

Over a year, manufacturing output declined slightly (−0.4%)

Cumulative output over the last three months (September to November) was lower than that of the same months of 2020 in the manufacturing industry (−0.4%), as well as in the whole industry (−0.2%).

Over this one-year period, output plummeted in the manufacture of transport equipment (−13.8%), particularly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−26.0%) which was strongly impacted by the semiconductor shortage. It decreased less strongly in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−3.7%). Conversely, it went up in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+3.6%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+2.9%), in “other manufacturing” (+0.6%) and in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+1.2%).

The evolution of the October 2021 manufacturing index is revised upwards

The evolution of the manufacturing index between September and October 2021 is revised upwards by 0.2 points (after rounding, at +1.1% instead of +0.9%), while it remains at +0.9% in the whole industry.
