In October 2021, output recovered in the manufacture of transport equipment

In October 2021, output recovered strongly in the manufacture of transport equipment (+8.8% after –8.6%), especially in the manufacture of other transport equipment (+13.9% after –4.2%), driven by the manufacture of air and spacecraft. Output also bounced back in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.4% after –1.0%), in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+0.5% after –0.8%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+0.6% after –2.4%). On the contrary, it decreased again in “other manufacturing” (–0.3% after –1.0%) and it fell back in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (–0.3% after +0.9%).

In October 2021, output remained in decline compared to its February 2020 level in most industrial activities. It plummeted in the manufacture of transport equipment (−23.7%), both in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−29.9%) and in the manufacture of other transport equipment (−19.6%). It also went down sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (−10.9%). Output declined more moderately in “other manufacturing” (−3.1%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−2.0%). Output was close to its February 2020 level in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (−0.1%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.7%).

Over a year, manufacturing output increased (+1.3%)

Cumulative output over the last three months was higher than that of the same months of 2020 in the manufacturing industry (+1.3%), as well as in the whole industry (+1.2%).

Over this one-year period, output went up in “other manufacturing” (+2.3%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+5.9%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.8%) and, more modestly, in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+1.0%). Conversely, it plunged in the manufacture of transport equipment (−9.4%), particularly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−24.0%) which was strongly impacted by the semiconductors shortage. It decreased slightly in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−0.7%).

The evolution of the September 2021 manufacturing index is revised downwards

The evolution of the manufacturing index between August and September 2021 is revised downwards by 0.2 points at −1.6% instead of −1.4%, as well as in the whole industry (at −1.5% instead of −1.3%).
