In the third quarter of 2021, producer prices of services accelerated sharply: +1.7% after +0.9% in the previous quarter. This is the largest one-quarter increase in available data since the first quarter of 2006. The acceleration in producer prices concerns both services sold to home businesses (+0.8% after +0.4%), those sold to households in France (+2.2% after +0.8%) and even more exported services (+5.9% after +3.5%). Year on year, producer prices of services accelerated (+2.9% after +1.7%).

Strong acceleration in prices for transportation and storage services
Prices for transportation and storage services accelerated strongly in the third quarter of 2021 (+3.0% after +0.5%). Those for warehousing and support services for transportation rebounded sharply (+4.8% after –0.4%), driven by the strong rise in prices for support services for transportation, while those for warehousing and storage services fell slightly (–0.3% after –0.5%). Furthermore, prices for land transport services and transport services via pipelines went up by 1.1% (after +1.0%). Year on year, prices for transportation and storage services accelerated strongly (+4.8% after +1.5%).
New rise in prices for accommodation and food service activities and for administrative and support service activities
Prices for accommodation and food service activities kept increasing in the third quarter of 2021 (+1.8% after +1.5%), mainly due to the rise in those for hotel and similar accommodation services (+6.0% after +7.9%). Year on year, prices for accommodation and food service activities went up by 1.3% (after +1.5%).
Prices for administrative and support service activities also increased in the third quarter of 2021 (+0.4% after +0.3%), sustained by the strong seasonal rebound of those for travel agency, tour operator and other reservation services and related services (+11.7% after –1.2%), in connection with the recovery of the activity. Year on year, prices for administrative and support service activities remained on the rise (+0.9% after +1.1%).
Slight rise in prices for real estate activities
Prices for real estate activities rose by 0.3% in the third quarter of 2021 (as in the previous quarter). Prices for renting and operating services of own or leased real estate accelerated slightly (+0.7% after +0.4%), whereas those for real estate agency services on a fee or contract basis declined sharply (–8.5% after –0.3%). Year on year, prices for real estate activities fell back (–0.9% after +0.5%).
Seasonal fall in prices for information and communication services
Prices for information and communication services fell back in the third quarter of 2021 (–0.4% after +0.6%), driven by the seasonal fall in prices for programming and broadcasting services (–7.1% after +12.9%) and by the downturn of those for computer programming services (–1.1% after +1.4%). Year on year, prices for information and communication were stable (after +0.6%)
Virtual stability of prices for professional, scientific and technical activities
Prices for professional, scientific and technical activities were virtually stable in the third quarter of 2021 (–0.1% after +0.2%). The seasonal downturn in prices for media representation services (–7.9% after +11.5%) was partly offset by the rise in prices for engineering services and related technical consulting services (+0.7% after +0.1%). Year on year, prices for professional, scientific and technical activities increased by 0.8% (after +0.7%).

In the third quarter of 2021, producer prices of services sold to households in France accelerated (+2.2% after +0.8%), due to the seasonal rises in prices for accommodation and food service activities (+4.2% after +0.1%) and for transportation and storage services (+4.6% after +3.2%). Year on year, producer prices of services sold to households in France kept accelerating in the third quarter of 2021 (+1.8% after +1.2% and +0.3%).

Services sold on foreign markets: +5.9%
In the third quarter of 2021, exported services producer prices accelerated sharply (+5.9% after +3.5%). They were once again driven up by the dynamism in prices for transportation and storage services (+16.4% after +9.5%). In particular, those for sea and coastal freight water transport services accelerated strongly (+27.6% after +17.0%), as a result of a sustained and persistant rise in demand while capacities were limited, and to a lesser extent, of the increase in oil prices. Year on year, exported services producer prices accelerated strongly again (+14.8% after +7.8% and +5.1%).

Definition: Services producer prices indices (SPPI) measure the quarterly evolution of transaction prices, excluding VAT, of services sold by French businesses. They are calculated, by market and by product, based on the results of the survey « Observation of prices in industry and services » (Opise) operated by INSEE.
SPPI are calculated on four types of market segments:
BtoB: business to business, corresponding to services sold to home businesses;
BtoC: business to customer, corresponding to services sold to households in France;
BtoE: business to exports, corresponding to services sold on foreign markets;
BtoAll: business to all, corresponding to the aggregation of the three market segments BtoB, BtoC and BtoE.
