The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In September 2021, the volume of sales in trade decreased (−1.1%), following a growth in August (+1.8%).

In September 2021, the sales volume fell back in the three main trade sectors

In September 2021, the volume of sales in wholesale trade dwindled (−1.4% after +1.6% in August). It decreased in household goods (−3.6% after +3.8%), and bounced back in food, beverages and tobacco (+2.3% after −1.1%).

The volume of sales in retail trade fell back slightly in September (−0.5% after +1.5% in August). This downturn was concentrated in retail trade not in stores (−6.5% after +6.6%), while the volume of sales was virtually stable in non-specialised stores (−0.1% after +2.2%), and kept increasing slightly in specialised stores (+0.3% after +0.2% in August). Within the latter, the volume of sales recovered in "other goods" (clothing, footwear, leather goods, etc.: +0.7% after −1.0%) and automotive fuel (+0.6% after −1.0%). It slowed down in other household equipment (furniture, appliances, hardware, etc.: +0.4% after +1.8%), and dwindled in information and communication equipment (−2.5% after +4.6% in August).

In September, the volume of sales in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased (−1.1% after +3.2%), especially for motor vehicles (−2.1% after +2.9%).

Forecast

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have increased by 0.6% in October 2021. From August to October, it may have increased by 3.8% when compared with that of the same period one year earlier.

The volume of sales of the third quarter increased by 1.7% over a year

The volume of sales of the third quarter of 2021 in overall trade increased by 1.7% when compared with that of the third quarter of 2020. It grew both in wholesale trade (+2.9%) and retail trade (+5.0%). On the contrary, it fell markedly in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−9.5%), a sector which had benefited from a significant catch-up in the months following the first lockdown in spring 2020. Within retail trade, the volume of sales increased over a year in specialised stores (+4.6%), in non-specialised stores (+4.0%), and in retail trade not in stores (+11.1%).

Revisions

The percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in August 2021 is left unchanged at +1.8% (rounded number) compared to the previous release.
