graphiqueRecent sales and ordering intentions
The balances of opinion on prices have reached unprecedented levels
In November 2021, the balances of opinion on selling prices for the last three and next three months have continued to increase and have both reached levels not seen since the start of these series (1991).
The balance of opinion on the level of stocks has accentuated its decline that began in June 2021 and deviated even further from its long-term average.
The bimonthly balance on cash position has fallen back sharply and returned to its long-term average level.
In retail trade (excluding trade and repair of vehicles), the business climate has improved again
In November 2021, in retail trade, the business climate has improved for the second month in a row. At 101, the composite indicator has gained three points and returned a little above its average (100). This further improvement is mainly due to the increase in the balances of opinion on workforce size for the next three months, past sales and ordering intentions.
The balance of opinion on the expected trend of the workforce size over the next three months has continued to rise, approaching its long-term average. This improvement mainly concerns the specialised retail trade.
The balance of opinion on sales for the last three months has rebounded strongly and approached its long-term average. This increase concerns both general trade and specialised trade. The balance of opinion on sales for the next three months has risen again, more sharply than in October, and has returned above its long-term average.
The balance of opinion on ordering intentions has increased again and has moved away from its average. The increase is driven by specialised retail trade, where this balance is close to its unprecedented level of July 2021. The balances of opinion on selling prices for the last and the next three months have continued to increase for retail trade as a whole and have hit new record levels since the beginning of these series (1991). The balance of opinion on past selling prices for the specialised retail trade sub-sector and that on expected prices in general retail trade have also reached levels not seen since 1991.
The balance of opinion on the current level of stocks, already below its average last month, has fallen back significantly. The bimonthly balance on the cash position has also fallen sharply and has returned below its own.
In trade and repair of vehicles, the business climate has fallen back

Revisions
The business climates for October 2021 in the sub-sector of retail trade and in that of trade and repair of vehicles have both been revised downwards by one point. These revisions are mainly due to the inclusion of late responses from companies.
For more information
The whole sector “retail trade and trade and repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles” is composed for 70% of retail trade and for 30% of trade and repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles.
For the three-modality questions, a balance of opinion is the difference between weighted percentage of “increase” or “above normal” answers and weighted percentage of “decrease” or “below normal” answers.
Since the definitive data of April 2020, the way of correcting non-response has been modified. The usual method was to fill in missing answers by carrying on past answers from non-responding companies. The results are now computed on the sole basis of responding companies.
Company responses were collected between 28 October 2021 and 19 November 2021.
