In September 2021, the price of oil in euros bounced back (+5.2% after −5.3% in August). The prices in euros of imported raw materials (excluding energy) fell (−1.6%, after −0.1%): food commodity prices fell back (−1.1% after +4.8%) and the prices of industrial raw materials continued to decrease (−2.4% after −6.1%).

Oil prices picked up

In September 2021, the price of North Sea crude oil (Brent) in dollars recovered (+5.1% after −5.7%), averaging $74.5. In euro terms, the increase in the price per barrel was equivalent (+5.2% after −5.3%).

The prices of industrial declined again

In September 2021, prices in euros for industrial raw materials continued to fall (−2.4% after −6.1% in August). Indeed, prices of mineral materials fell again (−3.5% after −6.4%) due to the drop in ferrous metal prices (−22.5% after −23.2%). Precious metal prices also continued to decrease (−2.6% after −3.2%) while non-ferrous metal prices accelerated (+4.3% after +2.7%).

Prices of agro-industrial raw materials increased (+2.9% after −5.1%), following the sharp rebound in prices of sawn softwood (+17.2% after −21.2%). On the contrary, wood pulp prices declined again (−1.9% after −0.7%) and natural rubber prices fell back (−5.6% after +5.8%). Hide prices accelerated slightly (+1.3% after +0.4%), while natural textile fibre prices slowed down (+1.8% after +2.9%). Finally, prices of tropical wood diminished slightly (−0.4% after +0.4%).

Food commodity prices edged down

Prices in euros of imported food commodities decreased in September (−1.1% after +4.8% in August), due to the sharp fall in meat prices (−8.5% after +11.9%), but also to the decrease in prices of cereals (−3.0% after −3.3%) and oilseeds (−1.1% after +1.7%). Likewise, sugar prices fell slightly (−0.6% after +9.9%). Only the prices of tropical commodities continued to rise (+5.6% after +6.9%). As for seafood prices, they were virtually stable (−0.1% after −0.6%).

Crude oil: from 1986, the price of Brent gradually established as a representative reference price of European supplies.

Petroleum: Prices of oil products are monthly averages.

Indices of non-energy raw materials imported by France: the indices calculated by INSEE are monthly averages of raw materials prices, weighted by their share in the French imports of raw materials (2010 = 100).
