Insee FocusDuring the First Quarter of 2021, Hotel attendance was at One Third of its Usual Level

Odile Dangerfield, Alice Mainguené (Insee)

During the first quarter of 2021, 60% of hotels in metropolitan France were open and barely a third of the available rooms were occupied. A year on from the start of the health crisis, the number of overnight stays in hotels is less than 64% of the average for the two years prior to the pandemic.

As was the case in 2020, Île-de-France accounted for half of the national decline. This region recorded the greatest drop in hotel occupancy during the first quarter of 2021 at –81% compared with the same period in 2019 and 2018. Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes was penalised by the closure of ski lifts in winter sports resorts.
