In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

In July 2021, the volume of sales in trade decreased (−3.2%) following the sharp rebound in June (+4.9%), that had been due partly to the lifting of the lockdown and the mandatory closures of shops and certain services.

In July 2021, sales volume decreased in the three main trade sectors

In July 2021, the volume of sales in wholesale trade fell back (−3.5%) after the strong rebound in June (+6.4%). It decreased in most of the sub-sectors, especially in household goods (−7.0% after +8.0%) and other specialised wholesale (−12.2% after +16.8%).

The volume of sales in retail trade decreased in July (−2.3% after +2.3% in June). It dwindled in specialised stores (−2.2% after +6.7%), continued to fall sharply in retail trade not in stores (−8.0% after −7.1%), and went on decreasing in non-specialised stores (−0.7% after −1.1% in June). Within specialised stores, the drop of the volume of sales is particularly marked in other household equipment (furniture, appliances, hardware, etc.: −8.5% after +7.9%) and cultural and recreation goods (−7.9% after +13.1%). The volume of sales of automotive fuel in specialised stores sped up sharply in July (+6.3% after +2.0%).

The volume of sales in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles fell back in July (−3.8%), following the sharp rebound in June (+4.4%).
