In August 2021, a slight fall in large-scale food retailing turnover

In August 2021, the turnover in large-scale food retailing decreased (−0.4%) after a slight growth in July (+0.5%). The turnover kept increasing in food products (+0.7% after +0.2%), while it dwindled in non-food products (−1.8% after +0.3%). Concerning the sales of automotive fuel, the turnover dropped in August (−3.5%), following a very strong rebound in May (+17.3%), June (+12.8%) and July (+9.7%), after the lockdown was lifted.

The turnover started to grow again in supermarkets (+1.1% after a virtual stability in July) and fell back in hypermarkets (−1.6% after +0.9%).

Increase in turnover over a year (+1.9%)

The turnover of the past three months (June to August 2021) in large-scale food retailing increased (+1.9%) when compared with that of the same period one year earlier. Admittedly, the sales decreased both in food products (−1.4%) and non-food products (−4.1%), but grew very strongly in automotive fuel (+24.1%).

Year on year, sales from June to August grew both in supermarkets (+3.5%) and - albeit more moderately - in hypermarkets (+0.8%).
