In July 2021, turnover in large-scale food retailing increased slightly Turnover in large-scale food retailing - July 2021
In July 2021, the turnover in large-scale food retailing increased slightly (+0.5%), following a fall in June (−2.3%). The growth of the sales was moderate both in food products (+0.2% after −6.4%) and non-food products (+0.5% after a stability in June). Concerning the sales of automotive fuel, the turnover continued to grow strongly in July (+8.9% after +13.0% in June). It thus exceeded its highest pre-pandemic level, probably in connection with a higher proportion of french people spending their summer holidays in France than in the previous summers and in a context of high fuel prices.
The turnover kept decreasing in supermarkets (−0.2% after −2.3%) and bounced back in hypermarkets (+1.1% after −0.8%).

Admittedly, the sales decreased both in food products (−0.3%) and non-food products (−3.1%), but grew very strongly in automotive fuel (+39.7%).
Year on year, sales from May to July grew both in supermarkets (+4.6%) and hypermarkets (+4.1%).
When compared with the same quarter before the health crisis (May to July 2019), the turnover in large-scale food retailing was also on the rise (+4.3%).
