In Q2 2021, buildings’ maintenance and improvement work prices – IPEA – rose strongly and continued to accelerate (+2.0% after +1.6% in Q1 2021 and +0.2% in Q4 2020). The rise was particularly sharp in roofing (+4.2% after +2.3%) and, to a lesser degree, in joinery installation (+2.6% after +2.8%), in other specialised construction activities (+2.1% after +2.1%) and in painting and glazing (+2.2% after +0.6%).

Prices rose at a more moderate pace in plumbing, heat and air-conditioning installation (+1.7% after +0.8%). They bounced back in other construction installation (+1.5% after –0.3%). Lastly they rose while slightly slowing down in floor and wall covering (+0.8% after +1.3%), in plastering (+1.0% after +1.5 %) and in electrical installation (+1.1% after +1.6%).

Over the quarter, prices rose more in the non-residential sector (+2.1%) than in the residential sector (+1.8%).

Over one year, buildings' maintenance and improvement work prices rose by 3.8% in Q2 2021 (after +2.1% in the previous quarter). The increase was also higher in the non-residential sector (+4.1%) than in the residential sector (+3.6%).

Prices stabilized in other construction installation (–0.1% after –1.1%) but rose sharply in every other sector: in joinery installation (+5.7% after +3.2%), in roofing (+5.5% after +1.9%), in other specialised construction activities (+4.6% after +2.9%), in painting and glazing (+3.6% after +1.7%), in electrical installation (+3.1% after +1.6%), in plumbing, heat and air-conditioning installation (+2.9% after +1.4%) and, to a lesser extent, in floor and wall covering (+2.0% after +1.3%). This high rise concerned also work in plastering with a slight slowing down (+4.3% after +4.8%).

Revisions

The evolution in the IPEA price index between the fourth quarter of 2020 and the first quarter of 2021 was revised by +0.3 points at +1.6%.

The buildings’ maintenance and improvement work price index (IPEA) is a quarterly index which measures the evolution of prices(net of taxes) charged by construction enterprises (including artisanal forms) for their maintenance and improvement works in residential and non-residential buildings during the quarter under review.

The IPEA indices are not seasonally nor working-day adjusted.
