In France in 2020, sales plummet in non-food retail and automotive trade and repair as a result of the COVID-19 health crisis. These sectors have been particularly affected by administrative closures, lockdowns and curfews. In wholesale trade, sales fall in almost all sectors. In contrast, sales in the food retail trade rebound. Activity is accelerating in the non-store trade, with the development of online sales. In 2020, wage employment in the retail sector fall by 1.0%, but is more resilient than in the market services sector excluding temporary work (-2.4%).

In the first quarter of 2021, the volume of sales is expected to exceed the level of the first quarter of 2019 in all trade sectors.
