10 June 2021 · n° 147In April, manufacturing output fell back slightly (–0.3%) Industrial production index - April 2021
In April 2021, output decreased slowly in the manufacturing industry (–0.3%, after +0.6%), as well as in the whole industry (–0.1%, after +1.0%). Compared to February 2020 (the last month before the first general lockdown), output remained in sharp decline in the manufacturing industry (–6.6%), as well as in the whole industry (–5.5%).
All series are seasonally (SA) and working-day adjusted (WDA).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

In April 2021, output declined in most major industrial activities
In April, output decreased slightly in “other manufacturing” (–0.3% after +0.4%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (–0.7% after +1.0%) and in the manufacture of transport equipment (–0.7% after +0.3%). After three consecutive months of increases, output also decreased in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (−1.0% after +4.8%). On the contrary, it grew again in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+1.3% after +3.1%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+0.5% after +1.0%).
In April 2021, output remained in sharp decline compared to its February 2020 level in most industrial activities. It slumped in the manufacture of transport equipment (−25.7%), slightly more strongly in the manufacture of other transport equipment (−27.3%) than in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−23.3%). It also plummeted in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (−17.7%). Compared to February 2020, output diminished more moderately in the manufacture of food products and beverages (–1.9%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−2.6%) and in “other manufacturing” (−4.0%). Output was above its February 2020 level in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+1.0%).

Over a year, manufacturing output expanded (+15.3%)
Cumulative output over the last three months was higher than that of the same months of 2020 in the manufacturing industry (+15.3%), as well as in the whole industry (+13.9%).
Over this one-year period, because of a significant “base effect” due to the first general lockdown in March and April 2020, output increased sharply in “other manufacturing” (+18.7%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+23.3%). It was also up significantly in the manufacture of transport equipment (+11.9%). It grew more modestly in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+6.4%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+2.7%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+4.6%).
