These provisional results are only preliminary data. Accordingly, they should not be used for contractual revaluations. The complete results will be published on 15 June 2021.
Moreover, the health crisis due to the Covid-19 impacts the quality of the data: price collection on the field has been progressively adjourned since the end of March 2021 with the lockdown of the different territories; moreover, certain products were unavailable for sale.
Additional information is available in “For further information”.
Over a year, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) should rise by 1.4% in May 2021, after +1.2% in the previous month, according to the provisional estimate made at the end of the month. This increase in inflation should result in particular from the acceleration of the energy prices. The prices of manufactured goods should be stable after a decrease in April. The decline in food prices should be slightly less marked than in the previous month. The prices of services and those of tobacco should slow down.
Over one month, consumer prices should rise by 0.3% in May after +0.1% in April. The service prices should accelerate in link with those of communication services and transport services. The prices of manufactured goods and those of energy should rebound compared with the previous month. The prices of food should grow at the same rate as in April and those of tobacco should be stable
Year on year, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices should rise by 1.8% after +1.6% in April. Over one month, it should increase by 0.4% after +0.2% in the previous month.

The price collection carried out by collectors on the field was adjourned with the beginning of lockdown, from the 16th March to the 15th June 2020, in November and December 2020 and progressively since the end of March 2021. Despite the introduction of new collection methods (price collection online, telephone collection, scanner data), the quality of the May indices was affected. The missing prices due to a lack of collection or an impossibility to purchase the products were imputed in compliance with Eurostat guidelines. After 3 weeks of price collection, the imputation rate should be 21%.
