28 May 2021 · n° 142In March 2021, turnover bounced back sharply in manufacturing industry (+ 8.4%) Turnover in industry and construction - March 2021
In March 2021, turnover bounced back sharply in the manufacturing industry (+8.4% after −4.8%) as in industry as a whole (+6.1% after −1.4%).
Export turnover also rebounded sharply in March (+15.5% after −14.1%).
Compared to February 2020 (last month before the first lockdown), turnover was in slight rise in the manufacturing industry (+0.4%) and was increasing in the whole industry (+2.4%).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In March, turnover in the manufacturing industry increased specially in the manufacture of transport equipment
In March, turnover increased very sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment (+44.8% after −29.6%), due to a sharp rebound in the “other transport equipment“ sector (+115.7% after a sharp fall in February ; −49.8%). The turnover also grew in the other sectors of the manufacturing industry; in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+3.5% after +1.3%), in “other manufacturing” (+1.7% after −0.4%), in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+18.4% after +7.4%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+2.5% after +0.2%). Conversely, it decreased in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (−2.5% after +13.6%).
Compared to February 2020, turnover increased in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (+12.1%), in “other manufacturing” (+2.8%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+3.6%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+2.8%). In contrast to that, turnover was in decline in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−10.3%) and in the manufacture of transport equipment (−7.6%).

Turnover in the manufacturing industry increased over one year (+2.4%)
With a base effect linked to the first lockdown in March 2020, the industry turnover over the last three months rose compared to that of the same three months of the previous year (+2.4% for the manufacturing industry, +3.5% for the whole industry). The rise was sharp in “other manufacturing” (+7.5%), in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (+8.2%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+6.9%). The growth was more moderate in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.9%). Over this same period, turnover was down sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−13.9%) and in the manufacture of transport equipment (−8.1%).
Revisions
The percentage change of the turnover index in February 2021 in the manufacturing industry has been revised upwards at −4.8% instead of −4.9%; it has been reestimated at −1.4% instead of −2.2% in industry as a whole, compared to the previous publication. This revision was mainly due to the inclusion of late responses.
