30 April 2021 · n° 112Household consumption expenditure on goods decreased markedly in March 2021 (–1.1%) Household consumption expenditure on goods - March 2021
Household consumption expenditure on goods decreased markedly in March (–1.1% in volume* compared to February 2021, after +0.3%). This decrease was due to the sharp drop in manufactured goods purchases (–3.7%), which was explained in particular by the implementation of lockdown measures and closures of "non-essential" stores in 19 departments and to a lesser extent by the aftershock of the postponement of February sales. Conversely, energy spending bounced back (+1.3% after –3.3%) as did food consumption (+0.8% after –2.0%).
Over the first quarter of 2021, household consumption on goods bounced back moderately (+1.2% after –4.1%), and remained 1.5% below to its fourth quarter 2019 level.

Manufactured goods: sharp decrease
In March, manufactured goods consumption decreased sharply (–3.7% after +3.9%), driven by the significant decreased in clothing and textiles purchases and the decline in durable goods consumption. On the contrary, “other engineered goods” purchases bounced back.

Over the whole quarter, purchases of durable goods increased a little (+0.5%), but remained 1.9% below their fourth quarter 2020 level.
Textile-clothing: significant decline
