Household consumption expenditure on goods decreased markedly in March (–1.1% in volume* compared to February 2021, after +0.3%). This decrease was due to the sharp drop in manufactured goods purchases (–3.7%), which was explained in particular by the implementation of lockdown measures and closures of "non-essential" stores in 19 departments and to a lesser extent by the aftershock of the postponement of February sales. Conversely, energy spending bounced back (+1.3% after –3.3%) as did food consumption (+0.8% after –2.0%).

Over the first quarter of 2021, household consumption on goods bounced back moderately (+1.2% after –4.1%), and remained 1.5% below to its fourth quarter 2019 level.

Total consumption of goods

  • Source: INSEE

Manufactured goods: sharp decrease

In March, manufactured goods consumption decreased sharply (–3.7% after +3.9%), driven by the significant decreased in clothing and textiles purchases and the decline in durable goods consumption. On the contrary, “other engineered goods” purchases bounced back.

Over the whole quarter, purchases of manufactured goods barely bounced back (+0.8% after –8.3%), and were 3.1% below their fourth quarter 2019 level.

Durables: decrease

In March, spending on durable goods decreased (–3.7% after +2.8% in February), driven by the decline in housing equipment expenditure (–6.0% after +10.1%), in particular furniture and household appliances purchases. Purchases of transport equipment fell again (–2.1% after –2.4%), due to a continuing drop in purchases of new cars.

Over the whole quarter, purchases of durable goods increased a little (+0.5%), but remained 1.9% below their fourth quarter 2020 level.

Textile-clothing: significant decline

In March, clothing and textiles expenditure decreased sharply (–11.5% after +17.0%), due in particular to store closures in the departments under lockdown and the aftershock of the sales which were extended throughout the month of February this year.

Over the quarter as a whole, consumption of clothing and textiles increased (+1.4% after –13.8%); it remained 8.0% below its fourth quarter 2019 level.

Other engineered goods: rebound

In March, consumption of "other manufactured goods" picked up (+1.7% after –1.8%), due to an increase in DIY spending and a rebound in purchases of sporting goods.

Over the whole quarter, spending on "other manufactured goods" increased (+0.8%).
