31 March 2021In January 2021, services output fell back (−4.6%) Index of services production - January 2021
In January 2020, services output dwindled (−4.6% after +5.3% in December), in part due to the tightening of the curfew. Compared to February 2020 (last month before the first lockdown), output was thus in clear decrease (−9.9%).
The indices presented here generally reflect well the magnitude of the shocks on activity in recent months, but month−to−month variations in certain specific sectors may possibly suffer from lags compared to activity. Indeed, the measurement of services production change is based mostly on invoicing computed from VAT declarations which may in some cases be lagged, as for example in the case of employment activities (temporary employment).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the services production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In January 2020, services output dwindled (−4.6% after +5.3% in December), in part due to the tightening of the curfew. Compared to February 2020 (last month before the first lockdown), output was thus in clear decrease (−9.9%).
In January 2021, output was down in a majority of sectors
In January 2020, output fell back in most major sectors: specialised, scientific and technical activities (–8.4% after +6.5%), administrative and business service activities (–4.6% after +1.2%), information and communication (–2.7% after + 4.0%), real estate activities (–3.2% after +10.7%) and arts, entertainment and recreation (−5.4% after −1.6%). The downturn was most significant in the accommodation and food services activities (–9.9% after +16.2%) particularly in food and beverage services activities (–10.8% after +15.9%) where the early 6 pm curfew may have impacted potential take-out sales. Conversely, output bounced back in transportation and storage (+2,5% after −2.4%).
Output in services stood at a lower level (−9.9%) than in February 2020 (last month before the first lockdown), in particular in accommodation and food services activities (−57.4%), arts, entertainment and recreation (−44.8%), transportation and storage (−7.0%) with a collapse in air transport (−54.9%). Output was also in decline in administrative and business service activities (–8.5%) and real estate activities (–5.1%) and in more moderate decline in specialised, scientific and technical activities (–1.7%). The information-communication sector is the only major sector up compared to February 2020 (+4.8%).
