In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In January 2021, turnover increased again in the manufacturing industry (+2.9% after +2.6); it also grew in the whole industry (+2.8% after +1.9%).

Export turnover rebounded in January (+4.0% after −2.2%).

Compared to February (last month before the first lockdown), turnover remained in decline, in the manufacturing industry (−2.9%) as in industry as a whole (−1.6%).

In January, turnover in the manufacturing industry increased in most sectors

In January, turnover rose sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment (+16.0% after +5.7%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+8.4% after +0.8%). It increased again in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+1.2% after +0.5%) and was almost stable in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.1% after +0.9%) and in “other manufacturing” (−0.1% after +3.0%).

Compared to February 2020, turnover remained sharply down in the manufacture of transport equipment (−8.6%) and also in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−29.0%). it declined more moderatly in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−1.2%) and was virtually stable in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+0.1%). Compared to February, turnover was in very slight rise in “other manufacturing” (+0.9%) and in sharp rise in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (+4.5%).

Turnover in the manufacturing industry decreased over one year (-5.7%)

The industry turnover over the last three months decreased compared to that of the same three months of the previous year (−5.7% for the manufacturing industry, –4.8% for the whole industry). The drop was particularly pronounced in the manufacture of transport equipment (−16.4%), particularly in other transport equipment (which includs aeronautics) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−34.2%). The decrease was less pronounced in “other manufacturing” (−0.9%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−1.7%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−2.4%). Over this same period, turnover decreased slightly in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (−0.6%).

Révisions
