The industrial producer prices rose by 1.2% in January 2021, after +0.9% in the previous month, mainly as a result of strong increases in raw material prices and tariff revaluations. They increased for the home market (+1.2% after +1.1%) as well as for the foreign markets (+1.3% after +0.7%). Year on year, the industrial producer prices were virtually stable (+0.1% after –1.2%).

Producer prices in French industry: +1.2%
The industrial producer prices rose by 1.2% in January 2021, after +0.9% in the previous month, mainly as a result of strong increases in raw material prices and tariff revaluations. They increased for the home market (+1.2% after +1.1%) as well as for the foreign markets (+1.3% after +0.7%). Year on year, the industrial producer prices were virtually stable (+0.1% after –1.2%).
HOME MARKET: +1.2%
The industrial producer prices for the home market increased by 1.2% in January 2021 (after +1.1%): the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water sped up and those of manufactured products remained dynamic (+0.8% after +0.7%). Year on year, the industrial producer prices for the home market rebounded slightly in January 2021 (+0.4% after –1.0%), breaking with the drops observed from February to December 2020.
Acceleration in prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water
In January 2021, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water sped up (+2.5% after +1.9%): the prices of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning rose by 1.8% again, as a result of a strong demand due to low winter temperatures. Furthermore, the prices of waste collection, treatment and disposal services and materials recovery services kept rising strongly (+7.7% after +3.9%), in connection with metal price increases. Year on year, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water sped up sharply in January 2021 (+4.1% after +1.8%).
Deceleration in refined petroleum product prices
In the wake of crude oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum products rose by 9.6% in January 2021 over a month (after +12.9%). Year on year, they kept falling (–23.4% after –31.2%).

Acceleration in prices of the “other industrial products”
The prices of the “other industrial products” rose by 0.8% in January 2021, after +0.4%. Due to a surge in raw material prices, the prices of basic metals sped up strongly (+5.0% after +0.6%) and those of fabricated metal products rose by 0.4% (after +0.2%). The prices of chemicals and chemical products remained dynamic (+1.5% after +1.7%), following increases of oil prices. The prices of repair and installation services of machinery and equipment rose also (+0.6% after a stability) due to tariff revaluations. Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” turned up slightly in January 2021 (+0.2% after –0.7%).
Downturn in food and beverage prices
In January 2021, the food and beverage prices decreased by 0.2% (after +0.5%): the fall in prices of preserved meat and meat products (–1.9% after +1.2%) was partially offset by the rise in those of dairy products (+0.6% after –0.3%). Year on year, the food and beverage prices were virtually stable (–0.1% after –0.2%).
Rise in transport equipment prices
In January 2021, the prices of transport equipment rose by 0.3% over a month (after +0.1%) and by 2.5% over a year (after +2.3%).
Virtual stability in the prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery
In January 2021, the prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery remained virtually stable over a month (+0.1% as in the previous month) and rose by 0.2% over a year (after +0.3%).

FOREIGN MARKETS: +1.3%
In January 2021, the industrial export producer prices sped up (+1.3% after +0.7%), as well as those of manufactured products (+1.1% after +0.3%). Year on year they remained nevertheless down (–0.3% after –1.7%).
The prices of the “other industrial products” sped up markedly (+1.8% after +0.4%), driven by those of basic metals (+6.0% after +0.9%), of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (+4.7% after –0.5%) and of chemicals and chemical products (+1.4% after +1.1%). Year on year, they bounced back (+0.5% after –1.4%).
The prices of refined petroleum products slowed down slightly over a month (+11.3% after +14.0%) and kept declining sharply over a year (–20.2% after –29.8%).
The prices of transport equipment recovered over a month (+0.5% after –0.5%) and decreased by 1.2% over a year (after –1.6%).
Those of food products and beverages remained virtually stable over a month (+0.1% after –0.1%) but declined by 2.3% over a year (after –1.9%).
At last, the prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery were stable over a month (after –0.1%) and decreased by 0.6% over a year (after –0.2%).

Import price indices of industrial products: +1.4%
The import prices of industrial products kept speeding up in January 2021 (+1.4% after +0.9% in December 2020 and +0.4% in November 2020), driven by the prices of manufactured products (+0.9% after +0.5%) and of unrefined hydrocarbons. Year on year, they declined by 1.5% in January 2021 (after –3.2%).
The prices of the “other industrial products” sped up sharply in January 2021 (+1.4% after +0.3%), driven by those of chemicals and chemical products (+2.7% after +0.1%), of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (+3.5% after –0.2%) and of basic metals (+4.0% after +2.1%). They turned up year on year (+0.5% after –0.5%).
The prices of coke and refined petroleum products slowed down slightly over a month (+8.5% after +12.1%) and declined by 25.9% over a year (after –35.1%).
The prices of transport equipment decreased by 0.5% over a month (after +0.2%), notably due to the fall in motor vehicle prices (–1.7% after –0.3%), as a result of a lower demand.
The prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery were virtually stable over a month (+0.1% after a stability) and over a year (–0.1% after +0.3%).
At last, the prices of food products, beverages and tobacco were up anew (+0.5% after a stability) and bounced back slightly over a year (+0.3% after –0.2%).
