In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In December 2020, turnover increased in the manufacturing industry (+2.1% following a stability in november); it also grew in the whole industry (+1.7% after +0.3%).

Export turnover fell in December (−2.3% after +6.1%).

Compared to February (last month before the first lockdown), turnover remained in decline, in the manufacturing industry (−6.1%) as in industry as a whole (−4.4%).

In December, turnover in the manufacturing industry increased in all sectors

In December, turnover rose again in “other manufacturing” (+2.0% after +2.5%) and sharply rebounded in the manufacture of transport equipment (+5.6% after −6.7%). It recovered in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.8% after −0.7%). The turnover continued to increase in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+1.0% after +1.4%) and recovered in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+0.9% after −1.6%).

Compared to February, turnover in industry remained down sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment (−21.2%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−34.4%). It declined moderately in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−1.6%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−1.3%). Compared to February, turnover was in very slight rise in “other manufacturing” (+0.2%) and in sharp rise in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (+3.7%).

Turnover in the manufacturing industry fell sharply over one year (-8.0%)

The industry turnover over the last three months fell sharply compared to that of the same three months of the previous year (−8.0% for the manufacturing industry, –6.6% for the whole industry). The fall was particularly pronounced in the manufacture of transport equipment (−22.2%), particularly in other transport equipment (which included aeronautics in particular) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−35.6%). The drop was less severe in “other manufacturing” (−3.1%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−3.8%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−1.6%). Turnover rose slightly in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (+0.2%).
