Household consumption expenditure on goods decreased sharply in January (–4.6% in volume* compared to December 2020) and returned to its level a year earlier, after having exceeded it in December. This decline was due to the sharp drop in the consumption of manufactured goods (–12.9% compared to December). After a particularly dynamic December with the reopening of all stores and the postponement of Black Friday, the backlash in January may have been amplified by the postponement of sales and the strengthening of the curfew.

Conversely, energy expenditure increased again (+6.3%), as did food consumption (+1.7%).

Total consumption of goods

  • Source: INSEE

Manufactured goods: –12.9%

In January, manufactured goods consumption decreased sharply (–12.9%), due to durable goods purchases (–9.9%), but also to spending on clothing and textiles (–27.8%) and other manufactured goods (–7.7%).

Durables: –9.9%

In January, spending on durable goods decreased (–9.9%). This decline was mainly driven by the drop in household equipment purchases (–24.6%), which were particularly dynamic in December due notably to the postponement of Black Friday. However, these purchases were still higher (+5.3% in January) than a year earlier. Purchases of transport equipment, in particular new and second hand cars, were on the rise again (+2.8% compared to December).

Textile-clothing: –27.8%

In January, spending on clothing and textiles fell strongly (–27.8% over the month). It was 14.4% below its level a year earlier. This fall came as the opening of the winter sales was shifted from the originally scheduled January 6 to January 20.

Other engineered goods: –7.7%

In January, consumption of "other manufactured goods" fell (–7.7%), due to the decrease of sales in perfume and sports equipment. Hardware and DIY sales fell in January, but remained well above their level a year earlier.
