In January 2021, the turnover in large-scale food retailing increased slightly (+0.6%), following a strong rebound in December 2020 (+10.4%). The turnover kept rising in food products (+2.4% after +1.6%). By contrast, it fell back in non-food products (−4.6% after +31.6%). Sales of automotive fuel kept increasing (+7.0% after +27.8%) while remaining at a lower level than that of February 2020.
Turnover slowed down in supermarkets (+1.0% after +5.3%) and decreased slightly in hypermarkets (−0.2% after +15.0%).
In January 2021, a slight increase in large-scale food retailing turnover
In January 2021, the turnover in large-scale food retailing increased slightly (+0.6%), following a strong rebound in December 2020 (+10.4%). The turnover kept rising in food products (+2.4% after +1.6%). By contrast, it fell back in non-food products (−4.6% after +31.6%). Sales of automotive fuel kept increasing (+7.0% after +27.8%) while remaining at a lower level than that of February 2020.
Turnover slowed down in supermarkets (+1.0% after +5.3%) and decreased slightly in hypermarkets (−0.2% after +15.0%).
Decrease over a year (−1.4%)
The turnover of the past three months (November 2020 to January 2021) in large-scale food retailing decreased (−1.4%) when compared with the same period one year earlier. Over that period, sales rose in food products (+4.7%). On the contrary, sales decreased in non-food products (−3.8%) and collapsed in automotive fuel (−28.0%).
Year on year, sales rose in supermarkets (+0.3%) while they decreased in hypermarkets (−3.5%).
