In 2017, gross disposable household income remained higher in Île-de-France
In 2017, gross disposable household income (GDHI) per head in France stood at 20,800 euros. Notwithstanding a gap which had been narrowing over the previous ten years, it remained above the national average in Île-de-France and to a lesser extent in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. In the overseas départements (DOM), it was on average a quarter lower than the national average. Income from employment constituted the principal source of disposable income in all regions, notably in Île-de-France. Social benefits paid in cash, the second component of gross disposable income, contributed more to household income in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Normandie and Occitanie.
Between 2007 and 2017, gross disposable household income (GDHI) per head grew in value by 11.3% in mainland France and by more in the overseas départements (DOM) (+19.2%). This increase can be explained by the trends in income from employment and social benefits. GDHI per head saw a slowdown in 2009 and even more so in 2013 in all metropolitan areas.
