Earned income is more widely dispersed among self-employed than among employees
In 2017, workers received an average of 22,930 euros per year from salaried employment and self-employment activities. This earned income was stable in real terms after three consecutive years of growth.
Self-employed persons earned 66% more on average than employees in the private sector; they were over-represented at the bottom as well as at the top of the income distribution.
Women earned on average 25% less than men. When different professional activities were combined, income from self-employment was often secondary. On the contrary, when self-employment was the main activity, it provided on average 80% of earned income.
