Insee FocusFarmers: less and less numerous and more and more men

Olivier Chardon, Yves Jauneau, Joëlle Vidalenc (division Emploi, Insee)

Mixed crop farmers, cattle breeders, cereal growers, wine growers, market gardeners, self employed fishers, agricultural contractors, etc.: in France, in nearly forty years, while farm size has increased, the share of farmers in employment has fallen sharply, from 7.1% in 1982 to 1.5% in 2019.

In 2019, among farmers, three quarters are men, a proportion that has increased over the past forty years, and more than half are 50 years old or older.

On average, farmers have a higher working time than the employed population as a whole, and they are more likely to work on Saturdays and Sundays.
