In Q3 2020, buildings’ maintenance and improvement work price index (IPEA) was almost stable (–0.1%), after a +0.2% rise in the previous quarter. Prices were practically unchanged in joinery installation, in floor and wall covering and in painting and glazing. They fell sharply in other construction installation (–1.1% after +0.7%), and in roofing (–0.9% after +0.5%). They fell slightly in other specialised construction activities (–0.3% after +0.1%). In electrical installation work, prices remained on a downward trend (–0.2% after –0.3%). Only plumbing, heat and air−conditioning installation prices rose in Q3 2020 (+0.4% after +0.3%).

Over the quarter, prices were almost stable in both the residential sector (+0.1%) and the non-residential sector (–0.1%).

Over one year, buildings' maintenance and improvement work prices increased by 0.8% in Q3 2020, after +1.1% in the second quarter. The increase was more pronounced in the residential sector (+1.0%) than in the non-residential sector (+0.5%). Prices accelerated in plumbing, heat and air−conditioning installation (+1.1% after +0.7%) and in plastering (+5.3% after +4.4%). Conversely, they fell back in other specialised construction activities (–0.2% after +0.2%) and slowed down in joinery installation (+1.1% after +1.5%), in electrical installation (+0.4% after +0.9%), in other construction installation (+0.3% after +1.7%) and in roofing (+0.5% after +2.5%).

Revisions

The evolution in the IPEA price index between the first quarter and the second quarter of 2020 was revised by +0.1 points to +0.2%.

The buildings’ maintenance and improvement work price index (IPEA) is a quarterly index which measures the evolution of prices net of taxes charged by construction enterprises (including artisanal forms) for their maintenance and improvement works in residential and nonresidential buildings during the quarter under review.

The IPEA indices are not seasonally nor working-day adjusted.
