2020- n° 281Manufacturing industry turnover rebounded in August 2020 (+1.5%) Turnover in industry and construction - August 2020
In August 2020, turnover rebounded in the manufacturing industry (+1.5% after −0.6%) as in the whole industry (+1.2% after −0.2%).
Export turnover kept increasing in August (+3.1% after +4.3%).
Compared to February (last month before the start of the general lockdown), turnover remained however in decline, in the manufacturing industry (−9.9%) as in industry as a whole (−8.3%).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In August 2020, turnover increased in all sectors, except the manufacture of food products and beverages
In August, turnover kept increasing in “other manufacturing” (+2.8% after +1.2%). It recovered sharply in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+4.5% after −1.8%). It increased slightly in the manufacture of transport equipment (+0.2% after −8.1%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+0.6% after −1.3%). By contrast, turnover declined in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−1.5% after +1.6%).
Within transport equipment, the situation was contrasted between the manufacture of motors vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+13.5% after +14.6%) and the manufacture of other transport equipment (−12.1% after −22.3%).
Compared to February, turnover in industry remained in sharp decline, especially in the manufacture of transport equipment (−30.5%). Turnover remained also lower in “other manufacturing” (−4.4%), in particular in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products (−11.9%), whereas in most other subsections its level was close to that before the general lockdown. Turnover remained significantly below its pre-lockdown level in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−34.2%). It was slightly below pre-lockdown level in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−2.7%).

Turnover in the manufacturing industry fell sharply over one year (-11.3%)
The industry turnover over the last three months fell sharply compared to that of the same three months of the previous year (−11.3% for the manufacturing industry, –10.1% for the whole industry). The fall was particulary sharp in the manufacture of transport equipment (−28.1%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−38.1%) and was less pronounced in “other manufacturing” (−7.5%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−7.9%) and in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (−4.3%). Finally, the turnover was almost stable over one year in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.1%).
At a finer level, within the manufacturing industry, turnover increased over one year only in the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (+5.0%).

Revisions
The percentage change of the turnover index in July 2020 has been reestimated at −0.6% instead of +0.5% in the manufacturing industry and at −0.2% instead of +1.1% in industry as a whole, mainly due to late incoming information from some companies over the summer period.
