2020- n° 255In July 2020, services output slowed down (+2.7%) and remained below its February
level Index of services production - July 2020
In July 2020 output in services recovered again (+2.7% after +12.6% in June). Compared to February, the output remained in a sharp withdrawal (−11.1%).
The indices presented here generally reflect well the magnitude of the shocks on activity in recent months, but month-to-month variations in certain specific sectors may possibly suffer from lags compared to activity. Indeed, the measurement of index of services production is based in particular on invoicing computed from VAT declarations which may in some cases be lagged, as for example in the case of employment activities (temporary employment).
The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
All data are corrected for seasonal adjustments and working day adjustments (SA-WDA).
In July 2020 output in services recovered again (+2.7% after +12.6% in June). Compared to February, the output remained in a sharp withdrawal (−11.1%).
In July 2020, the output increased in most sections
In July 2020, the output kept increasing strongly in transportation and storage (+13.1% after +12.4% in June) and in accommodation and food service activities (+23.9% after +129.8%), for all their sub-sectors. It kept increasing in administrative and business support activities (+5.1% after +3.3%), arts, entertainment and recreation (+38.5%, after +27.2%) and other personal services (+4.3% after +7.8%). By contrast, output fell back in information-communication (−1.0%), real estate activities (−7.1%) and specialised, scientific and technical activities (−5.8%).
Compared to February, output in services remained in a sharp withdrawal (−11.1%) notably in administrative and business support activities (−14.7%) and specialised, scientific and technical activities (−8.8%). The decline was even more important in accommodation and food service activities (−21.5%), and arts, entertainment and recreation (−33.4%). Transportation and storage (−9.3%), air transports (−51.0%) and warehousing and support for transportation (−12.6%) were the most impacted sectors while land transports got close to its output level before general lockdown (−2.4%). The output remained at a lower level than February in real estate activities (−12.0%) and other personal services (−8.2%). Information-communication was the only large sector where the output in June was close to February (−0.7%).
