2020- n° 228In July 2020, manufacturing continued to recover (+4.5%) Industrial production index - July 2020
In July 2020, output continued to recover in the manufacturing industry (+4.5%, after +14.8% in June), as well as in the whole industry (+3.8%, after +13.0% in June). Compared to February (the last month before the start of the general lockdown), output declined in the manufacturing industry (−7.9%), as well as in the whole industry (−7.1%).
The data on which INSEE usually relies to compile the construction production index could not be processed for June and July. In order to produce an estimation, INSEE and the statistical service of the Ministry of Ecological and Inclusive Transition (SDES) relied on auxiliary data. The treatments implemented are explained in the methodological note referenced in the “Documentation” section.
All series are seasonally (SA) and working-day adjusted (WDA).
The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
Manufacturing output increased over the last three months (+5.4%)
Over the last three months, manufacturing output increased in manufacturing industry (+5.4%), as well as in the whole industry (+5.0%).
Over this period, output continued to recover in all industrial activities. It expanded strongly in “other manufacturing” (+6.7%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+9.9%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+13.1%). It increased more moderately in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+3.0%), in the manufacture of transport equipment (+1.1%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.4%).

In July 2020, output continued to recover in the majority of industrial activities
In July, output increased again, but at a slower rate than in June, in “other manufacturing” (+3.7% after +13.5%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+8.6% after +15.2%), in the manufacture of transport equipment (+8.1% after +39.5%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+2.3% after +6.9%). It was virtually stable in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (0.0% after +4.3%) whereas it decreased strongly in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (−6.9% after +19.1%).
In most industrial activities, output yet remained below its February level. It was notably the case in the manufacture of transport equipment (−22.9%). Output was also below its February level in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products (−13.1%), in chemicals (−12.7%) and in the manufacture of textiles, wearing apparel, leather and related products (−11.7%). Output got closer to its February level in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−0.6%) and in the manufacture of electrical equipment (−1.6%). In July, only in pharmaceuticals, output was higher than its February level (+2.5%).
