2020- n° 218In August 2020, consumer prices increased by 0.2% year on year Consumer price index - provisional results - August 2020
These provisional results are only preliminary data. Accordingly, they should not be used for contractual revaluations. The indices published here are based on a limited set of price observations and from estimates of some rates of change for fares which are not yet available. The complete results will be published on 15 September 2020.
Moreover, the health crisis due to the Covid-19 impacts the quality of the data: price collection on the field was adjourned from the 16th of March to the 15th of June; on the other hand, certain products were unavailable for sale. However, in August, as in July, only 1% of CPI basket is therefore imputed due to the health crisis, after one quarter in June.
Additional information is available in “For further information”.
Over a year, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) should rise by 0.2% in August 2020, after +0.8% in the previous month, according to the provisional estimate made at the end of the month. This drop in inflation should result from a downturn in manufactured products, linked to the postponed summer sales, and a slowdown in food prices. Contrariwise, energy prices should fall less year on year than in July. Finally, the prices of services and tobacco should rise, year on year, as the same rate as in the previous month.
Over one month, consumer prices should edge down by 0.1%, after +0.4% in the previous month.
Manufactured product prices should drop sharply, after a stability in the previous month. Those of energy and services should slow down and those of tobacco should be stable. Finally, food prices should rebound slightly in the wake of fresh product prices, after a sharp drop in the previous month.
Year on year, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices should slow down, to +0.2%, after +0.9% in July. Over one month, it should edge down by 0.1%, after +0.4% in the previous month.

For further information
The CPI is calculated using scanner data, prices collected by INSEE collectors in physical outlets and a centralized collection (online collect, administrative data).
The price collection carried out by collectors on the field (about 40% in the CPI) was suspended from the 16th of March and the 15th of June. Despite the introduction of new collection methods (price collection on the Internet, telephone collection, increased use of cash register data), the quality of the April, May and June indices (and to a lesser extent March) was affected. In addition, few products were still unavailable for sale in August. These missing prices due to a lack of collection or an impossibility to purchase the products were imputed in compliance with Eurostat guidelines.
