2020- n° 201In June 2020, manufacturing continued to recover (+14.4%) Industrial production index - June 2020
In June 2020, output continued to recover in the manufacturing industry (+14.4%, after +22.2% in May), as well as in the whole industry (+12.7%, after +19.9% in May). Compared to February (the last month before the start of the general lockdown), output nevertheless declined in the manufacturing industry (−12.4%), as well as in the whole industry (−11.0%). Compared to June 2019, output decreased also in manufacturing industry (−12.5%), as well as in the whole industry (−11.7%)
The data on which INSEE usually relies to compile the construction production index could not be processed for June. In order to produce an estimation, INSEE and the statistical service of the Ministry of Ecological and Inclusive Transition (SDES) relied on auxiliary data. The treatments implemented are explained in the methodological note referenced in the “Documentation” section.
All series are seasonally (SA) and working-day adjusted (WDA).
The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

Compared to June 2019, output decreased also in manufacturing industry (−12.5%), as well as in the whole industry (−11.7%)
Manufacturing output decreased markedly over the second quarter (−18.9%), after −6.4% over the first quarter
Over the second quarter of 2020, manufacturing output slumped in manufacturing industry (−18.9%), as well as in the whole industry (−17.1%).
Over this period, output collapsed in the manufacture of transport equipment (−40.8%). It fell sharply in “other manufacturing”(−18.1%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−19.8%). It declined more moderately in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (−6.9%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−6.0%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−6.3%).

In June 2020, output continued to recover in all industrial activities
In June, output kept increasing strongly in “other manufacturing” (+13.2% after +25.5%), in the manufacture of transport equipment (+39.5% after +52.7%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+14.6% after +29.3%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+18.9% after +13.4%). It increased more moderately in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+6.6% after +1.7%) and in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+4.1% after +10.0%), two activities less impacted in March and April.
In most industrial activities, output yet remained below its February level. It was notably the case in the manufacture of transport equipment (−29.1%) and particularly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi−trailers (−34.7%). Output was also below its February level in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products (−19.5%), in the manufacture of textiles, wearing apparel, leather and related products (−13.5%) and in manufacturing of rubber and plastics products (−13.0%). In the manufacture of food products and beverages (−2.7%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−5.2%) output got closer to its February level. In contrast, in pharmaceuticals, output rose slightly (+3.5% compared to February).
